Giannini – 109 Years of Tradition and State of the Art Technology
In November of 1900,
Brazil was in the midst of a period of great expectations and transformations. It was during this particularly promising moment
in Brazil’s history that the renowned Italian luthier Tranquillo Giannini decided to pursue his dream: to set up a workshop
to build acoustic instruments in Brazil, a country that he greatly loved. His dream proved a success, and in a short time the small workshop,
bearing his family name, grew into a factory. In the 1930’s, the company began to manufacture strings to meet
the growing demand. To this day, Giannini continues to practice the lessons of the company’s founder. These fundamental standards
are preserved in the fact that Giannini’s current methods of production bring together the time-honored techniques of
Tranquillo’s craftsmanship with the most efficient and modern methods of industrial technology. This is the philosophy that continues to
guide Giannini in the 21st century. Their products pass through a strict process of quality control, and leave the factory
fully imbued with the reliability, craftsmanship, and ultimate care that have been the hallmark of the Giannini name since
1900. And, of course, all their products rely on that which Giannini holds in the highest regard: its name. With over 109 years of tradition and state of
the art production technology Giannini instruments and strings are “Crafted with a Brazilian Soul”; internationally
famous for their unique Brazilian sound, rich in harmonics, mellow and very well balanced. Giannini products include a wide
variety of strings, guitars, mandolins, ethnic instruments and the exclusive Craviola®.

Giannini-The Secret Behind the Sound
The history of Giannini has always been intertwined with that of Brazilian music.
Since the beginning Giannini had its doors open to all musicians and worked hard to satisfy their needs. The continuous search
for the ultimate tone quality and balance, superior playability and attractive design has always been the core of Giannini’s
mission. Beyond that, there is a genuine desire to adapt the instruments to current music trends. In the early 60’s Giannini was working together with several musicians to develop guitars that would
sound great with the new music movement that became known as Bossa Nova. Famous musicians from that time such as Luis Bonfá,
Roberto Menescal, João Gilberto, Baden Powell, Paulinho Nogueira and many others were friends and frequent visitors
to the Giannini factory, where they made important contributions to the new sound of Giannini’s nylon guitars. Until
then, construction of nylon guitars was based on the Spanish models which were made mainly for solos and for the Flamenco
and Classical styles. Their sound was too brilliant, with great projection but with too much emphasis on the individual notes.
The Bossa Nova style required an instrument with a mellow tone, very rich in harmonics and extremely well balanced, so that
the typical Bossa Nova open chord would be heard as a united blended sound with its full color, without revealing each individual
note. Fortunately, the combined talent of the Brazilian musicians with some highly skilled Giannini luthiers was the perfect
formula to develop the ideal Bossa Nova guitar. Later, with the
Bossa Nova style mixing and blending with the American jazz and even the classical style, the Giannini nylon guitars again
had to adapt and evolve. The great challenge was to keep the balance, tone and playability of the Bossa Nova guitar, but also
offer enough sound projection for solos, classical and jazz styles. With an open mind and great vision, Giorgio Giannini decided
to bring in some of the best luthiers available to improve and redesign the Giannini nylon guitar line. Among these luthiers
were internationally famous names such as Sérgio Abreu and Shigemitsu Sugiyama who not only helped to develop some
extraordinary instruments but also left their legacy with Giannini. Today,
the Giannini line of nylon guitars has all the qualities of the past and offers a variety of models to satisfy virtually every
taste. Additionally, the Giannini tradition of working together with great musicians, of having an open ear for new sounds
and to continually change and evolve is the basis for their success. “Crafted with a Brazilian Soul”—that’s
Giannini’s secret.
